Tried Burlap on Friday, and I generally liked it. Beware that it's loud inside (on purpose), and there's too much bass outside on the patio (for no particular reason, I hope they fix that!) If you stick to the small and mid-sized plates, prices are reasonable with lots of fun items. I also tried out the Cinepolis theater, which ran $90 for a family of four to see Harry Potter in 3D ($22.50 a seat. Wait, $22.50 a seat?!!) Add $30 for popcorn and drinks, and it's $120. I liked the facilities, but they're still working out issues: dirty 3D glasses, volume levels set too high for me (especially for the previews), and why are they previewing "Final Destination 5" (a horror movie) in front of Harry Potter?
The Del Mar Horse Races have started and there's a big Horse Show at Showpark. To make make matters worse, the Surf Cup Soccer tournament is running this weekend (July 23-25) and next (July 30-Aug 1) at the Polo Fields. Use caution when driving north on El Camino Real this weekend, especially near the Polo Fields (at Via de la Valle).
The new restaurant in the Del Mar Highlands Town Center at the corner of Del Mar Heights and El Camino Real (the old Warehouse building) is called Burlap, and it's facebook page claims, "SADDLE UP! North County's hottest new restaurant, BURLAP, will be open to the public THIS FRIDAY, July 22nd!! Call us today at 858-369-5700 to make your reservation!!"
So, the new movie theater at the Del Mar Highlands Town Center will be Cineopolis, a Mexican chain that's moving into the US luxury theater market. There's an article in the NC Times and one in SignOn San Diego. I've heard about comfortable seats, good food and sections that serve alcohol. But, I've also heard about waiters serving in the theater during the movie, and $19 ticket prices! I also understand that they'll be opening soon, perhaps even this week, so we'll see how it all works out. NOTE: The Cineopolis Facebook Page says "opening Wednesday" and "opening Friday", and "the movie schedule is not final yet". So, there's still some issues to be worked out.
