Local Students Do Amazing Things!

Local students at all our schools do some pretty amazing things, the latest news is the CCA Ravens are in the FIRST Robotics competition at the Sports Arena this weekend, participating in the FRC division (the "Big" robots!) Not to be outdone, Carmel Valley Middle Schools Science Olympiad Team finished first in the regional competition, and their Mathcounts Team had 6 students qualify to compete in the state competition on March 17! And the community makes all this possible, providing funding and volunteers to these programs. Please, support your PTSA or your Foundation with your time or your money, every little bit helps!

Del Mar Highlands Town CenterDavanti Enoteca (858-519-5060) and its sister restaurant Mia Francesca (858-519-5055) have opened in the Del Mar Highlands Town Center. Located adjacent to the Cinepolis theater, they should bring a taste of Little Italy to Carmel Valley. Davanti Enoteca is a restaurant and wine bar with more sophisticated food, while Mia Francesca is more casual, with a family atmosphere. The latest on One Paseo

One Paseo comparableCarmel Valley Main Street (www.CarmelValleyMainStreet.com) has a story on One Paseo, about how big it REALLY is and how it compares to the La Jolla Crossroads development. See One Paseo is bigger than you Think. This covers a local San Diego development of comprable size, something you can visit to see what the Kilroy project might be like.

The Carmel Valley News has some letters: the first, about the Project Putting Carmel Valley's Best Qualities at Risk. And, it really is at risk. This could turn our San Diego neighborhood into a Los Angeles nightmare. It's funny how people can write letters that say things like, "this would be good for our community", or, "Kilroy has been responsible." They're clearly not looking at the same project that I see. So, it's time for Kilroy to present a smaller alternative to the project, something that we could actually live with.

Police Warn of Scam Involving Fake Utility Workers

The Police warn of two incidents outside of Carmel Valley where a man identifies himself as a utility worker, asking to inspect the rear of the house. While the victim is distracted, a second suspect goes inside the house and commits a burglary. Victims are usually elderly. The male suspect is described as a well groomed, 40-50, 5’5” to 5’8”, with short dark hair. This is a scam. Consider calling the utility to confirm the work if any unsolicited utility workers request access to your property.

City Restoring Some Library and Park Hours

The City of San Diego has announced that revenues are ahead of budget for the first time in a long time, and they will be restoring some hours for Libraries and Parks (hurray!) It looks like the Library will increase from 35 to 40 operating hours per week, and the Recreation Centers will increase from 40 to 45 hours per week. Revenue increased by $18M dollars, mostly through sales, property and transient occupancy taxe gains. Expenses were still over budget, leading to a $16.5M surplus. $5M will be spent increasing City services, including Libraries, Parks, Police and Fire. You can find the Mid-year Budget Update here.

One Paseo Letter on Leadership

There's a letter in the Carmel Valley news from Bob Freund, speaking against the One Paseo development. Bob is a Carmel Valley resident, and, for what it's worth, I believe his background is Real Estate Development, so he's not uninformed:

I am gratified by the increasing numbers of my neighbors who are questioning why Kilroy should be allowed to nearly quadruple the development of One Paseo. To us it appears that the developer’s ability to purchase both a set of favorable “expert” recommendations, and a lobbyist to persuade her former Development Services colleagues to accept them are successfully influencing the city process. It’s time for our elected leaders to measure this groundswell of community opposition and act on it before the approval process is further abused.

The issue is not whether the by-products of this massive expansion can or can’t be successfully mitigated. The real issue is if the future character our community is to be determined by the profit motives of this single deep-pocketed property owner and the influence of his “hired guns,” or if it is to be determined by the rights the rest of us secured when we purchased our properties. What rights are those? Quite simply that the Community Plan entitlements of still vacant parcels would remain in force, ensuring that the scale and character of future development in Carmel Valley would match the scale of our existing community.

The complete letter, "One Paseo, It's time for our leaders to lead", may be found on the Carmel Valley News Website.

Friends of One Paseo

One Paseo scale

Do you consider yourself in the Friends of One Paseo, or more in favor of a smaller Carmel Valley Main Street? We all know that Del Mar Heights Road in Carmel Valley gets totally messed up at certain times of the year, imagine it with One Paseo completed, when there will be an additional 30,000 cars on the road! On top of that, imagine more development at the Town Center, they're approved already for another 150,000 sq ft of retail (9,000 cars). And, the new Pacific Highlands Ranch shopping center, out by CCA, could add even more! Our suburban San Diego paradise just might turn into a parking lot.

One Paseo's Main Street has very high density, similar to what you'd find in New York City. Think of what a metro downtown street might look like. It's likely walkable, but the buildings are likely 4, 5 or 6 stories tall, exactly what Kilroy has proposed for One Paseo in Carmel Valley! Does this sound like a suburban San Diego street to you, or something more like an inappropriate Urban Center?

I would love to see something with a village atmosphere, a more small-town approach to development. The final project can still have all the same uses, just at a lower scale.

Best Restaurant List: Burlap and Urban Plates

Ranch & Coast Magazine has their Best Restaurants 2012 List out, and two of our locals made the cut: Burlap, for Best Bar Scene, and Urban Plates, for Best Fast Casual. Congratulations! The complete list can be found at the Ranch & Coast 2012 Best Restaurants Page.

One Paseo Could Be a 40 Story Building

While One Paseo may not be a 40 story building, the development has the floor space to be one. If you count all the parking, the One Paseo project has over 3.6 Million square feet of developed space. This is enough to build a structure the size of two football fields that is 40 stories high! So, if we built a 40 story building with a 2 acre footprint, we could then have 20 acres of parkland in Carmel Valley. I'm being totally sarcastic here, but which would you rather have? A tall building with a large park, or the One Paseo solution, where lower buildings reduce the open space to almost zero? Would it help if it was a 4 acre building that was 20 stories high?

Street Comparison to One Paseo

This is a street in Barcelona that, while more scenic than One Paseo will ever be, gives a comparison as to how tall the buildings might be on Main Street in Carmel Valley. Actually, many of the One Paseo buildings will be one floor taller. I can imagine something like this downtown, but it really doesn't look like a suburban village street to me.

Two Torrey Pines HS Foundation Events

Our local schools are hurting due to state funding reductions, so I'd encourage everyone to support them to the best of their ability. This allows the schools to provide programs that would otherwise not be available. The Torrey Pines High School Foundation has a couple of fundraisers coming up: The casual "A Taste of Torrey" on Sunday, February 26, 2012 at the PAC, and the Foundation's annual gala, "Pump Up The Volume!" on March 31, 2012 at the Belly Up. See the Torrey Pines Foundation Website for complete information.

Torrey Pines Players Production of Man of La Mancha

The Torrey Pines Players will perform Man of La Mancha February 22-25 and February 29 to March 3, 2012. Additional information is available at the Torrey Pines Players web page and online reservations are available at their Reservations Page.

Carmel Valley Does NOT Support One Paseo!

One Paseo will generate more trafficIt's time for us to stand up and tell Kilroy that their vision of One Paseo is NOT what we want for Carmel Valley. We're willing to agree to a mixed-use project that is appropriate to the community, but not to the monstrous Urban Mall that they've proposed. We don't want a Los Angeles Infill Project. San Diego is a City of Villages, and we want our Village!

Mary's Tack Tent Sale

Thanks (again!) to Karen Billing at the Carmel Valley News for pointing out that Mary's Tack is holding their tent sale this weekend. If you're not familiar with Mary's, it's a great equestrian store and pet supply place located down by the Polo Fields and Showpark (Horse Park?) You can find them online at MarysTack.com, or on Facebook or Twitter. I also just discovered that they have a blog at: marystack.wordpress.com.

Do Any Carmel Valley Residents Support One Paseo?

One Paseo will increase traffic in Carmel ValleyWhen you read published letters in support of Kilroy's One Paseo and see news that sounds like the whole community is behind it, I would encourage you to be skeptical. Many of these letters appear to be from political consultants, public relations firms, developers and businesses with connections to Kilroy. I believe that almost everyone in Carmel Valley is against the massive, Los Angeles style development that is proposed for our home. We should all push for a smaller, village-like Carmel Valley Main Street, something that fits our suburban San Diego community.

Ugly New Cinepolis Electronic Sign

Note: Cinepolis has fixed this issue, removing the flashing and intense colors. The sign now looks fine, and fits the community better. Thanks to the Town Center and Cinepolis for being good neighbors and getting this resolved quickly.

Has everyone seen the ugly new electronic sign installed by Cinepolis? This is a flashing sign with overly intense colors that is way too bright and visually distracting. I can't say enough bad things about this sign. If someone wants to put an electronic sign into Carmel Valley, it should be classy and upscale. That is, it should use muted colors, not be too bright, not be flashing and not use animations to distract adjacent drivers. I encourage everyone to complain to Cinepolis and the Donahue Schriber management office.
