San Dieguito Riverpark trail extended to Mary's Tack & Feed

Interesting article in the Carmel Valley News by Karen Billing about the opening of the San Dieguito River Park’s Coast to Crest Trail adjacent to the Del Mar Horsepark (to Mary's Tack & Feed.) The section of the trail opened on Jan. 12, completing a two-and-a-half-mile stretch of trail that begins at Jimmy Durante Boulevard, near the Del Mar Fairgrounds. See the Del Mar Horsepark portion of Coast to Crest Trail now open article in the Carmel Valley News for more information, or the San Dieguito River Park website (note: the Lagoon Trail Map shows part of the trail, and will likely be updated with complete information soon.)

Weekend outlook: warm, windy and high surf

Watching the weather forecast for the MLK holiday, it looks like a warm 75 degrees for Monday & Tuesday (see NWS Forecast.) However, there are warnings for high winds, high surf and rip currents (see NWS warning.) Of course, if you look at the current water temperatures (see Tides Online at the bottom of the page), the ocean is still a brisk 55 degrees! If you do brave the cold water, be careful of the waves and currents. The rest of us can enjoy a nice day at the beach, watching the big surf and thinking of summer.

The Electric Run 5K at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, Feb 2, 2013

The Electric Run is coming to the Del Mar Fairgrounds in February. This looks like an event that's a cross between exercise, a concert, and a light show. The event starts at 7:00 pm on Saturday, February 2nd, 2013 at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. The Fairgrounds has a lot of exciting elements that will make this an amazing Electric Run™. Palm trees, ponds, tunnels, and so many more things to light up and have fun with. We know this event will take your breath away! See electricrun.com/san-diego-ca/ for details, it's already 90% sold out.

Whole Foods to open Feb 27, 2013

It sounds like the new Whole Foods market at Flower Hill Mall (www.flowerhill.com) on Via de la Valle has finally got everything organized, and will be opening on Feb 27, 2013 at 9 AM. This is from an ad in the latest San Diego Magazine...

Urban Solace coming to Flower Hill Mall

Urban Solace (see www.urbansolace.net) will be a new restaurant at Flower Hill Mall (www.flowerhill.com) on Via de la Valle. See the Carmel Valley News story for more info. I don't see a date for the opening, but I suspect they'll renovate the old space, so it will take a while.

Crazy Weather, Jan 2013

It seems like the weather has gone a bit over the edge this week! If you look at the National Weather Service page, and specifically the local Del Mar Weather Alerts, there's warnings for just about everything: rain, high tides, high surf, coastal flooding, strong winds, cold weather, snow in the local mountains! Note that the high tides will be in the mornings on Thursday, Friday & Saturday, and that the coldest weather will be Friday night (although, they've raised the forecast low a bit, to 37 degrees.)

One Paseo update, Jan 2013

Yes, Kilroy has reduced the size of One Paseo, but it's still out-of-scale with the surrounding community, and the change barely puts a dent in the traffic created by the project (now it's "only" 23,000 additional cars!) Sure, they've added a Trader Joe's (hey, we want a Trader Joe's, too!), but that's not the point. Trader Joe's would still work in a much smaller project, something that would fit in Carmel Valley.

If you're concerned, the project will be presented to the Carmel Valley Planning Board on Thursday, Jan 24 at 7:00 PM at the Canyon Crest Academy, Auditorium, 5951 Village Center Loop Road, San Diego, CA 92130. Additionally, I've heard that Kilroy is presenting a One Paseo Open House on Thursday, January 10 from 4:00-7:00 PM at the Kilroy Centre Del Mar Campus, 3579 Valley Centre Drive, Suite 150, San Diego, CA 92130. If you have a minute, show up and tell them that the project is still too big.

Harvest Ranch gone, CV Farmers Market gone

Well, the Harvest Ranch Market in the Del Mar Plaza has closed (see the Carmel Valley News Story), as has the Carmel Valley Farmers Market. That means fewer choices in the area and more people driving into Carmel Valley for shopping. Let's hope the opening of the new Whole Foods at Flower Hill Promenade restores some balance, as it looks to be a beautiful facility! On the other hand, getting in and out of Flower Hill could be a challenge. Let's hope it works out for the best!

San Diego Election Results are Final

Remember the election? Seems like forever ago! Well, the County has finally finished counting the votes, and the SDVote.com site has the final, official results! The San Dieguito school bond (Prop AA) did pass, but the Mira Costa and Del Mar bonds did not. Other results did not change with the final count. Good thing, because the City government officials had already been sworn in! The state results still aren't complete, but all votes must be counted by December 7, with the results certified by December 14. See the California Secretary of State site for complete details.

Teddy Bear Drive to benefit Rady Childrens Hospital

One of my favorite holiday (and beyond!) toy drives, the local Law Enforcement Teddy Bear Drive! This is a drive to collect stuffed animals for kids at Rady Children's Hospital. My kids have benefitted from this, and for a child, getting a stuffed animal after surgery is very comforting. The local Carmel Valley Police Station on El Camino Real will have a collection box at the front counter for new stuffed animals with tags still attached. Drop off on Mondays or Thursdays, 8am-4pm. The last day to give a bear is December 10th. For more information contact JST Officer Brigitta Belz (858) 523-7027, or see the SDPD Northwestern Division Facebook Page.

Two people hit by cars last week, please be careful!

We live in an area with very busy streets, with the traffic often causing people to try to "beat" the signal or drive faster that they otherwise might. Just last week, there were two incidents in Carmel Valley where people were hit by cars: In Torrey Hills, a man was killed when jaywalking across Carmel Mountain Road, and a nanny pushing a stroller was hit (minor injuries) crossing Carmel Creek Road near Piazza Carmel. As the community development increases (with the build-out of Pacific Highlands Ranch, additional development at the Del Mar Highlands Town Center, and the eventual construction of something at the One Paseo site), the traffic will only get worse. If you're driving or walking out there, please try to be careful!
