CV Library Concerts, Oct 9 and Oct 23, 2013

October’s free family music program will be presented on Wednesday, Oct. 9 at 7:00 p.m. It will feature the Early Music Ensemble of San Diego in a concert of English, French, and Italian madrigals from the Renaissance. The group, which performs a cappella, has given concerts in the San Diego area since its inception. Its members are all professional singers and have several CDs to their credit. The concert will last 45 minutes. Additionally, a special free family music program will be presented on Wednesday, Oct. 23 at 7:00 p.m. It will feature three Canyon Crest Academy students who have been playing jazz together for three years. The Scott Roberts Trio has won numerous awards at jazz festivals around town. You can often find it playing every Thursday at the CCA Farmer's Market. Is members are Michael Carlson on tenor saxophone, Max Vinetz) on bass, and Scott Roberts on piano. Its program will last 45 minutes. September's free family music program, on Wednesday, September 11 at 7:00 p.m., will feature soprano Constance Lawthers and pianist Janie Prim in a musical tour of Spain, Argentina, Brazil, Venezuela, and Mexico. You will hear an ancient pilgrimage song from the Camino de Santiago, tributes to Lope de Vega, plaintive cowboy songs from the plains of Argentina, beautiful popular songs, and travelogue commentary. Then, on September 28 at 1:00 pm, a concert program of "Kids Playing for Kids" will be presented. It is the first in a Fanfaire Foundation series that will celebrate the program's second anniversary. It will feature pianists Michael Chen, Angie Gou, Adrian Liu, and Clara Truong; French hornist Christine Chen; and cellist Paul Maxwell. They will play solos and duets by Chopin, Dvorak, Liszt, Mozart, Paganini, Poulenc, and Prokofiev, and the love theme from the film Titanic. This August, the CV Library’s free family music programs will include Adrienne Nims and Spirit Wind with pianist J R Betts playing global jazz at 7:00 PM on August 14, 2013, and pianist Andrew Vu in a program of music by J S Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, and Liszt at 1:00 PM on August 31, 2013. Free Library Concert, July 24, 2013

A free family music program sponsored by the Friends of the Carmel Valley Library will be held on Wednesday, July 24 at 7:00 p.m. in its community room. It will feature Dromia in a program of Balkan folk music. The trio, formed in 2008, plays folk music from Greece, Albania, Bulgaria, Macedonia, and Turkey, as well as Roma (gypsy) melodies from this region. It has performed at many venues in Southern California, including San Diego’s Folk Dance Center and Balboa Park’s Spanish Village, Café Aman in Los Angeles, Kypseli Greek Dance Center in Sherman Oaks, the Laguna Folkdancers’ Festival in Newport Beach, and the annual Greek festivals in San Diego and Cardiff. Its members are Mary Marshall on various ethnic percussion instruments, Sanna Rosengren on vocals and violin, and Dan Ziagos on accordion. The program will last 45 minutes. Free Library Concert, July 10, 2013

July’s free family music program sponsored by the Friends of the Carmel Valley Library will be held on Wednesday, July 10 at 7:00 p.m. in its community room. It will feature Celia Lawley, the Fiddle Girl, in a program of Irish, Cajun, Bluegrass, Gypsy, Greek, and other violin music. The program will last 45 minutes. Celia’s love of music started at age 5 with lessons in violin, piano, and voice. She graduated from the USC School of Music with a degree in violin performance and then began performing popular styles of music including country, bluegrass, Latin jazz, rock, blues, Cajun, and Celtic. This led to performances throughout the United States and Canada on TV and at fairs, festivals, and concerts, including ones at the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede, Pacific Northwest Exhibition, National Rodeo Finals, SeaWorld, San Diego Zoo, and Ramona Bluegrass Festival. She has also performed at many libraries and other venues in Southern California as a solo act and with various bands. June’s free family music program sponsored by the Friends of the Carmel Valley Library will be presented on Wednesday, June 12, at 7:00 p.m. in the library’s community room. It will feature the Trio con Brio, San Diego performing music by Shostakovich, J S Bach, Gaspar Cassado, David Popper, Beethoven, Schumann, Lizst, and Mendelssohn. Trio members are violinist Shirley Wu, cellist Meagan Wu, and pianist Stephen Ai, all juniors at Canyon Crest Academy. The concert will last 45 minutes.
